I've been "forced" to use the standard pins for the time being. Hopefully this problem is something that will be fixed in the near future. The people I know at Google have nothing to do with Google Maps, so I don't want to bother them with this, I know they have plenty of other stuff to worry about.. =) If anyone has more information on this, please let me know and I'll do a follow-up post on this.
